The Benefits of Cataract Lens Surgery

There is plenty of help available for people who are affected by cataracts. In the early stages when the cataract is small there are eye drops that can help delay the process of the cataract spreading. Even some lifestyle changes like improvements to diet can help stem the expansion of the cataract. Ultimately, however, if no surgical treatment is received, the cataract will spread across the eye and cause blindness. Having surgery may sound very daunting, but the procedure is, in fact, very straight forward, safe and quick. Plus, there is very little recovery time needed. This is a guide to the main benefits of cataract lens surgery.

Buy Online Prescription Eyeglasses and Discount eye glasses at Eyecareglassesonline.com

Benefit 1. The cataract is dealt with
There is no denying that cataract surgery removes the cataract instantly. But if you are thinking of having cataract surgery you should also consider refractive lens exchange which will not only remove the cataract but also correct your vision, which is ideal for those over the age of 50. It works by removing the existing lens of the eye where the cataract has formed and replacing it with an artificial lens.

Benefit 2. The cataract cannot come back
As well as removing the cataract altogether, the artificial lens cannot be affected by cataracts in the future. The artificial lens can never become hardened or become cloudy in the way that a natural lens can. Once your cataract has been removed and your eyesight has returned, you can be sure it will remain clear and bright long into the future.

Benefit 3. Eye sight is fully restored
Many patients do not realise quite how bad their cataract was and when their sight is returned to them they cannot believe the difference. A cataract can cause sensitivity to bright lights. It can also cause double and blurred vision and halos to be seen around lights. They can even cause complete blindness if left untreated. Once the lens has been replaced however all these problems will instantly disappear.

Benefit 4. No more wearing glasses
If you have had to rely on glasses or contact lenses for any period of time you will know what being able to get rid of them for good will mean. If the cataract is removed during a refractive lens exchange procedure other eye problems such as long and short sightedness, also known as refractive errors, will also be corrected and eye sight is completely restored so any glasses or contact lenses can be disposed of for good. This form of cataract surgery truly brings a new lease of life to anyone who undergoes treatment.

Benefit 5. Recovery period is very short
It takes just a few days to recover from cataract surgery. Patients are often back at work in a few days. Sometimes there may be some swelling or redness following surgery but this can be helped with some eye drops that the surgeon will provide. A good rest is necessary immediately following surgery and of course no rubbing or touching of the eye, but normal life returns literally a couple of days following the surgery.

Benefit 6. Suitable for people with astigmatism
Refractive lens exchange is a treatment which is also suitable for people with astigmatism which many forms of eye surgery aren’t. Astigmatism is an irregularity in the shape of the cornea, so instead of being round it is oval and can cause images to focus on the retina incorrectly normally distorting them and causing blurry vision at all distances.

People considering cataract lens surgery should also seriously consider refractive lens exchange as they will be able to fix their eyesight aswell in the same surgery and prevent the cataracts from returning. The surgery puts an end to eye problems immediately. The procedure is very similar to a standard cataract operation procedure except that the patient will get a lens which also corrects their vision. It is quick, just 20 minutes per eye.

Self-Adjustable Eyeglass Lenses

In developed countries, getting glasses is a simple matter: Visit an optometrist, get a prescription and have it filled at a corner store. Not so in the developing world, where there are few optometrists and little money for luxuries like eyeglasses.

Enter Joshua Silver, an atomic physicist at Oxford with a penchant for tinkering. “I like to experiment,” he said. “Take things apart and figure out how they work.”

In the 1980s, he began a do-it-yourself project making lenses whose focusing power could be changed by the user. He designed and built a liquid-filled packet made of two flexible transparent membranes — a liquid lens. Adding or draining liquid changes the curvature, making the lens stronger or weaker.

“I realized after a few months that I could make a very good lens — good optically, but not for glasses,” Dr. Silver said. “I started some dialogue with the World Health Organization and found the director of the program for the prevention of blindness. I asked him how many people in the world needed glasses and don’t have them. He said it was about a billion.”

Working with a British government grant, Dr. Silver developed a practical pair of adjustable eyeglasses. The two lenses are filled with clear silicone fluid, and there is a dial on each arm. The user puts on the glasses and then twists each dial until vision in both eyes is satisfactory.

The glasses do not correct for astigmatism, Dr. Silver said. “Many people, if you just correct their spherical refractive error, you get vision good enough to function.”

The glasses are not beautiful. The thick frames resemble those worn by Jean-Paul Sartre. But the dial and pump can be removed after adjustment. More than 30,000 pairs are in use by adults worldwide, and a study financed by the World Bank is testing a version for use by teenagers.

Dr. Silver is director of the Center for Vision in the Developing World, and his goal is to see a billion people wearing the eyeglasses they need by 2020. “We are trying to reduce the cost both by design and increased volume,” he said. NICHOLAS BAKALAR

Keeping the Sun at Bay and the Water Away

SUN rays reflecting off the ocean can be blinding, not to mention harmful to one’s eyes. Still, surfers have long resisted wearing protective sunglasses or goggles because they were too easy to lose, too likely to become foggy or waterlogged.

But now there is ventilated, draining eyewear made to be worn while surfing, windsurfing, kayaking and jet skiing. Adjustable straps keep them secure during spills.

Some of these impact-resistant frames for watersports have long been available. Just as it took a long while for surfers to start wearing zinc-based sunblock, said Chris Coté, the editor of Transworld Surf magazine, they are only now starting to wear sunglasses to protect against cataracts and pterygium, a fleshy growth on the white part of your eye caused by prolonged sun exposure.

To see if watersport glasses made a difference, Katie Coryell, a professional surfer and instructor at Surf Diva, a school for women and girls in La Jolla, Calif., wore them on the water for a week. She was eager to try them, she said, because “some of my contemporaries already have eye problems, and I have a lot of years of surfing ahead of me.”

FCC OKs on-body medical networks

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission adopted rules at a meeting on Wednesday to allow wireless networks of microstimulators designed to treat paralysis and other conditions.

Buy Affordable Buy Glasses Online and Eye Care Glasses Online at Eyecareglassesonline.com

The agency approved the use of MMNs (medical micropower networks) in four blocks of the 400MHz spectrum band despite opposition from broadcast engineers who say they are concerned about interference. One of the frequency blocks is used by trucks that send live media reports back to TV and radio stations.

Microstimulators implanted next to nerves can stimulate those nerves through electrical charges, causing muscles to contract and limbs to move. MMNs can link dozens of those stimulators to devices that take in signals from the human nervous system, bypassing areas of the nervous system that have been impaired by strokes or spinal cord or brain injuries.

The Alfred Mann Foundation (AMF), which has developed prototype MMNs, sought access to the spectrum for these systems in 2009. It did not seek exclusive access to the frequencies and said the new networks could coexist with other users. In a press release on Wednesday, the FCC called the new rules an example of how "spectrum-agile" radios can make more efficient use of scarce spectrum.

In a related development, the agency's Office of Engineering and Technology issued an order allowing Second Sight Medical Products to sell a retinal prosthesis that uses wireless transmissions to restore sight to the blind through a miniature video camera mounted on a pair of glasses. The camera sends images to a video processing unit, and the video is then sent wirelessly to a neurostimulator implanted on the eye. It is designed for people with advanced retinal degenerative disease.

Though having to tilt the head downwards is a standard studying posture, at occasions we would read textual content as we hold the e book right in front of the face. According to eye experts' introductions, there are four types of eye diseases that are rather popular. Among them, most cases are related to the stimulation from cosmetics to eyes, so these kinds of eye diseases are called cosmetics-caused eye diseases.

Fungal corneal disease

Some scholars from foreign countries through sample investigation confirmed that a great deal of fusarium solani could be found in the mascara. One piece of new mascara may be contaminated about 1.5 before it is used, but when it is put into use, the rate of being contaminated increases to about 60% which is several times higher than the original one. Fusarium solani causes fungal corneal disease easily, and even worse it will cause the lost of eye vision.

Using your eyes to track the future of computing

In the 2002 film Minority Report, one way that we know that it takes place in the future is because Tom Cruise does an online search by swiping images back and forth with a wave of his hand. To the people at Tobii Technology, however, that's old news -- they're envisioning a future where you control your computer using eye movements.

Buy Online Designer Eye Glasses and Sunglasses Online at Eyecareglassesonline.com

Tobii is a ten-year-old company based in Stockholm, Sweden, which produces eye tracking technology for a number of uses, including assistive technology (which helps disabled people use eye movements to communicate or manipulate objects), product development and academic/scientific research.

However, according to Barbara Barclay, general manager of analysis solutions for Tobii, the company has a wider audience in mind. "The founders had a vision of an eye tracker in every household," she says.

Barclay was in New York City earlier this week to help introduce EyeAsteroids, an arcade game that is simultaneously somewhat old-fashioned (you try to shoot down asteroids before they crash into the Earth) and innovative (you do it just by using your eyes). The game is, currently, strictly for businesses or the comfortably wealthy -- there are only 50 units being manufactured at $15,000 apiece -- but Tobii is hoping that it will illustrate the future potential of the technology.

I had a chance to try out Tobii's system using a smaller venue -- a Lenovo laptop tricked out with the company's tech. The hardware was hidden in a strip which was attached to the bottom of the laptop's display; the software was Windows-based, although there is now a Mac version as well.

According to Barclay, the company's eye tracking works by shining infrared light into your eyes and taking rapid photos, capturing the reflection of two reference points within the eye. From those, the software can create a 3D model of your eye and can tell where you are looking.

It was a fascinating experience. I first followed a small circle with my eyes as it moved to different parts of the screen in a process not unlike that you had to follow with older touch screens. I then tried a simpler version of the game -- and sure enough, as I looked at the asteroids heading toward the Earth, they blew up in a very satisfactory manner.

There were other applications used to illustrate possible consumer and business uses of eye tracking technology. I was (with a bit of difficulty) able to scan a collection of photos on the bottom half of the screen, select one and, by looking towards the top of the screen, expand it to fill the screen. I could also select one of several windows on the display by simply looking at it. It didn't work perfectly -- because I was wearing reading glasses at the time, the synchronization between my eyes and the tech was occasionally off -- but it was pretty impressive nonetheless.

It's going to be a while before eye tracking technology really hits the commercial/retail market. (And of course, Tobii isn't the only company working in this field.) According to Tobii's Barbara Barclay, though, the systems are becoming small and inexpensive enough so we might actually start seeing the first products in a very few years.

There are a variety of possible business uses -- for example, a stockbroker or other business staffer whose job depends on speed would welcome an interface where just looking at a business stat could open up a search or menu. However, gaming -- as illustrated by EyeAsteroids -- is more likely to be the first step toward public usage, especially since gaming computers already tend to push the bleeding edge of today's technology.

"What if you looked at something [in a game] and it looked back at you?" Barclay posits. "What can be more realistic than to have characters look back? It takes the whole meaning of avatars to a new level."

What are the advantages of using Progressive eyeglasses?

Did you know that, “Four out of every five wearer prefer progressive eyeglasses as compared to the bifocals?”

Yes, this is true. According to some clinical studies, people adapt to progressive eyeglasses much more easily and comfortably, as compared to the traditional bifocals. This is primarily because of the numerous advantages associated with the use of progressive eyeglasses. In the past, individuals suffering from presbyopia had no other options but to choose between the bifocals and the trifocals. The problem of visible lines with both these traditional lenses have been overcome by the progressive lenses which are much more capable of replicating natural vision more successfully. Instead of providing just two or three lens power, progressive lenses provide a progressive power transition. Progressive eyeglasses enable its wearer to effectively achieve distance vision, close vision as well as the intermediate vision, through different portions of their lenses. Given below are some of the primary benefits of progressive eyeglasses.

Buy Affordable Buy Glasses Online and Eye Care Glasses Online at Eyecareglassesonline.com

1. No bifocal lines

The traditional bifocals or the trifocals have visible demarcation lines which many wearers consider to be a sign of ‘passing age. ‘However, progressive eyeglasses come without any visible and obvious lines of demarcation, which makes these eyeglasses all the more popular among its wearer.

2. Easy adjustment of the additional lens power

Progressive eyeglasses enable its wearer to easily adjust the additional lens power essential for clear vision. In order to have a clear vision at different viewing distances, wearers can easily adjust the lens power by tilting their heads to sight. With the introduction of the progressive eyeglasses, Presbyopia patients, no longer need to move their heads up or down or keep any of the uncomfortable postures in order to have a clear vision. All they have to do is, look straight ahead to capture the distant vision, move their heads slightly lower in order to get intermediate vision and lower their gawk even further to get near vision.

3. Coverage of all vision distances

Progressive Eyeglasses can comfortably cover all vision distances. The lenses of these eyeglasses offer a smooth, seamless progression of numerous lens powers. There are thus capable of providing a comfortable vision, remarkably at multiple distances.

4. Eliminates the problem of Image Jump

Most of the wearers of the prescription eyeglasses, commonly face the problem of ‘Image Jump'. This problem is basically seen in the bifocal and the trifocal lens wearer who have to undergo sudden power changes. They undergo annoying vision problem of ' Image Jump' whenever they try to move focus from the visible lines of their eyeglasses. Furthermore, the eyeglasses with the traditional bifocal and trifocal lenses offer clear images only within the obvious range of distances. There are chances of fuzzy image beyond certain distances with the bifocal and the trifocal lenses. Progressive eyeglasses totally overcome all these problems caused by the eyeglasses with the bifocal or trifocal lenses and provide a comfortable prescription transition. There may be chances of obscure peripheral vision in few of the first time users of the progressive eyeglasses, which easily disappears as the wearer adjusts and adapts himself to the new pair of progressive eyeglasses.
These are some of the few benefits of using progressive eyeglasses because of which they have garnered popularity among the customers of the eyeglasses.

Diabetic Eye Disease Overview

Diabetes mellitus is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide, and, in the United States, it is the most common cause of blindness in people younger than 65 years of age.

In addition to being a leading cause of blindness, diabetic eye disease encompasses a wide range of problems that can affect the eyes.

Diabetes mellitus may cause a reversible, temporary blurring of the vision, or it can cause a severe, permanent loss of vision.

Diabetes mellitus increases the risk of developing cataracts and glaucoma.

Some people may not even realize they have had diabetes mellitus for several years until they begin to experience problems with their eyes or vision. Severe diabetic eye disease most commonly develops in people who have had diabetes mellitus for many years and who have had little or poor control of their blood sugars over that period of time.

Diabetes mellitus may also result in heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and circulatory abnormalities of the legs.

The American Diabetes Association estimates that 20 million people in the United States have diabetes. One-third of this population is unaware of their illness. A recent change in the exact definitions of diabetes and "pre-diabetes" by an international expert committee leads to the estimate that an additional 41 million people in the United States (40% of adults aged 40-74 years) have "pre-diabetes," a condition that significantly increases their risk for developing diabetes.
This new definition underscores the importance for everyone to take steps to help prevent the development of this disease. Individuals can try to avoid the problems associated with diabetes mellitus, including those that affect the eyes, by taking appropriate care of themselves by:

Maintain a normal weight

Watch your diet, especially limiting unhealthy types of fats and substituting complex carbohydrates for simple carbohydrates.

Participate in an exercise program, performing at least 2 1/2 hours of aerobic exercise very week.

Do not smoke

Lifestyle management has been shown to reduce the risk of developing type II diabetes and pre-diabetes by at least two-thirds. It can also slow or halt the progression of pre-diabetes to diabetes.

If you or someone you know has already been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, the following steps should also be taken:

Monitor blood sugars and glycosylated hemoglobin. (The protein in the red blood cells that carry oxygen is called hemoglobin. Glycosylated hemoglobin is hemoglobin that has bonded to blood sugar.)

Take diabetes medications as prescribed by the healthcare provider.

Some of these eye diseases are curable while some are not as some can be stopped from advancing and some can even be totally reversed. There are five eye diseases which are most common in effecting the eyes. The first one on them is known as Hyperopia which is more commonly termed as far sightedness. It is the kind of eye problem where the distant vision is clear but the eyes are unable to focus on close work. The major symptom of far sightedness is blurred vision when performing or dealing with close works like reading. Other symptoms of this eye disease include headache and eye strain. The eyeball in this case becomes shorter than it normally should be and therefore a deformation of the eye muscle takes place.

The second one of these major eye diseases is Myopia which is more commonly known as near sightedness. In this case the person is unable to see distant objects clearly and as a result different other problems arises because distortion of the eye ball takes place due to near sightedness and is exactly opposite to that of Hyperopia as the eyeballs lengthen more than they normally should. Cataract is the third one among these eye diseases and is usually considered to be related to aging as the eye becomes weaker with age and as a result naturally occurring proteins join together and make clumps which increase in size over time and begin to grow over the lens thus making the vision blurry.

Astigmatism is the fourth eye disease in which the cornea of a person ceases to be round in shape and becomes curved and as a result the vision is affected and it needs to be diagnosed by a specialist in order to be treated in the right manner. Glaucoma is the fifth one and is one of the most common eye diseases where a person loses peripheral vision due to damage of the optic nerves and it is also the main symptom of it. It is caused by the build up of fluid in the eye. It has the tendency to come on slowly thus a person does not realize that his vision is changing. So in order to protect ourselves from this disease one needs to get his eyes examined every two to three years so that it can be diagnosed even before symptoms of it occur.

Walmart tries new tech with eye on consumers

Walmart could start letting shoppers buy products in the aisles and skip the checkout line, but the world's largest retailer needs to find out how that would improve the customer experience, the company's e-commerce chief said Thursday.

With Apple's new EasyPay feature for its Apple Store iOS app, shoppers with an iPhone 4 or 4S can buy some products simply by scanning the barcode, entering their Apple ID, and walking out with the item. Venky Harinarayan, Walmart's senior vice president of global e-commerce and head of Walmart Labs, said the issue with setting up such a feature is not technology but the user experience.

"Yes, you can do this. ... What we've got to figure out is, how do you make that customer experience something really worthwhile," Harinarayan said. The same is true of other new technologies. "These are not technology problems, they are customer experience problems."

Walmart is also interested in NFC (near-field communication) for making purchases by phone and in setting up a social network among the shoppers in its stores. But the company has just begun to study how those could make Walmart a better place to shop, Harinarayan said. He appeared in an on-stage interview at the GigaOm Roadmap conference in San Francisco. Walmart Labs was established earlier this year in Mountain View, California, following the retailer's acquisition of Harinarayan's startup Kosmix, to try out these types of ideas, he said.

Walmart has high hopes for a blending of social media and shopping, Harinarayan said. At the corporate level, the company could use trend information from social-networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to inform its product and distribution decisions. Walmart Labs is setting up a "big and fast data group" to explore ways to take advantage of the huge amounts of information it has about shopping behavior and combine it with social-networking data, he said.

For example, finding out when people in Wisconsin start mentioning college football in status updates could help the company decide when to start putting team merchandise on shelves in that state, he said. And decisions about what toys to sell during the year-end holiday season, which need to be made in February or March, prove more accurate if the company looked at what types of toys people were talking about at that time, he added.

Within brick-and-mortar stores, Walmart may eventually set up a mobile social-networking service of its own, where shoppers and sales associates all could post comments and questions that everyone in that store could see, Harinarayan said. "How will this work? We don't know. But it's a very interesting experiment for us," he said.

Walmart's online store could tap into social networking even more deeply, Harinarayan said. The company is trying to find the right way to take advantage of data on daily activity on online social services. That won't be simply by having a Facebook page where users can find and buy things, but through integrating shopping into the usual things Facebook users do, he said. An obvious way is with buying gifts, a naturally social activity. "Gifting is not done well today on the Web," Harinarayan said.

"This actually has been playing really, really well over the last few weeks as we've started engaging some of this," he said. Mining social-networking data "can impact billions of dollars of merchandise if we get it right," he added.

Walmart eventually would like to provide an API (application programming interface) and let third parties create applications using some of these capabilities, but it is still very early in the development process, Harinarayan said.

Harinarayan declined to give more details on Thursday about Walmart Labs' purchase of Australian startup Grabble, a developer of point-of-sale systems for mobile phones.

How to treat eye infection

There are different forms of eye infection, but the most common form is bacterial conjunctivitis which is a disease caused by bacteria. These germs can come from upper respiratory area or patient skin and can be caught from another person with conjunctivitis. During this infection there is chewy discharge due to which the lid attaches together particularly when the person gets up after sleeping. A patient has redness; swelling and irritation in eye and it typically affect one eye and can be extended to the other eye.

Another form of eye infection is viral conjunctivitis which is related to common clod and sore throat. Its indications include irritation, itching, watery discharge and redness. The disease starts on one eye but may spread to the other eye. Allergic conjunctivitis is an eye infection whose common causes are other allergic syndromes like asthma, eczema and hay fever. Pollen, dust particles or cosmetics are some reason of this conjunctivitis. Its symptoms include itching, increased production of tears and swollen eyelids and it generally affects both eyes. Chemical conjunctivitis happens if some acidic or alkali substance gets into the eye. Some people are at risk to smoke, gases and chemicals in swimming pools. Its indications include irritation, pain, redness and watering.

Eye infections can happen in any age group of patients. Some eye infections can increase to severe disorders. Most eye specialists treat eye diseases in a hostile way. People who have suffered eye surgery or eye injuries are at higher risk of disease and some eye ailments are highly infectious so if someone has infection and you come across such person you are at a greater risk of becoming infected.
We can avoid eye infections by many ways. These ways include washing hands before and after touching your face or eyes and Avoid rubbing the eyes as this can increase infection. Do not use eye makeup until eye disease is fully treated. Do not share eye makeup, pillows and towels. Do not recycle handkerchief instead use tissue when needed. Do not swim as swimming pool contains some chemicals that can damage eyes. When working with chemicals put on safety glasses. Keep your eyes away from dirty water and protect your eyes from wind and heat.

We can treat eye infection and pain by applying a clean cloth soaked in lukewarm water to your eye for five minutes every two hours. Flaxseed can treat swelling, irritation and pain of eye. For 15 minutes heat flaxseed in 4 ounces of water and put this warm solution on cloth and apply it on eyes three times a day. Another home treatment for eye infection is Chamomile. For 15 minutes heat 3 cups of chamomile in 2 cups of water and wash eye with this mixture three times a day. Rose water is one of the simplest and best treatments for eye infection. Dip cotton in rose water and apply it on your eye for 15 minutes. Aloe Vera juice is also effective for eye infection take some Aloe Vera juice dip cotton in it and place it on the eye for 15 minutes. Carrot juice is very healthy and useful for curing eye infection. One more home remedy for eye infection is Ginger. Heat small piece of ginger in water dip cotton in this solution and apply it on the eye for some time it gives relief from itching and irritation.
